In today’s blog post I will write about Hz or Hertz, that is the refresh rate of your screen. Every monitor has Hertz, and those on the monitor represent its refresh rate, that is, how many times the screen refreshes its image per second.
Here’s how the hertz on the monitor does it, for example a monitor with a refresh rate of 60 hertz shows sixty frames in one second. If we consider a monitor with higher refresh rates such as 165Hz, that monitor will offer you excellent image fluidity.
Hertz is very important especially in FPS games, because it represents the frame rate per second. For example, if you’re playing an FPS game, you’ll see your enemy pop out from behind the barrier sooner because they’ll appear on your screen faster.
In almost all games, the most important part is the appearance of a game and how fluid the game is, in that case the DCR function is important. Learn more about this feature in our article on What is DCR on a monitor?.
Why Is Hz Important?
- Smoother Motion:
- Higher refresh rate results in less stuttering during fast moving scenes, making gaming and action-packed videos more enjoyable.
- Improved gaming performance:
- As I said earlier in the text, a faster refresh rate gives you an advantage over your opponent, especially when they play fast-paced games like shooters or racing titles.
- A better everyday experience:
- Higher refresh rate also favors non-gaming tasks. Scrolling through documents or web pages is noticeably easier.
How Does Hz Affect Gaming and Daily Use?
For gaming monitors with a higher refresh rate provide better responsiveness and smoother gameplay.
When it comes to movies many are recorded at twenty-four frames per second, so it may not be important to have a monitor with a high refresh rate.
For everyday use and casual users, I think it’s enough to have some standard refresh rates like 60Hz to 120Hz.
Which Refresh Rate Should You Choose?
- 60Hz: Suitable for basic tasks such as browsing, office work or watching standard videos. This is some standard for everyone
- 120Hz/144Hz: Ideal for casual to serious gamers, offering smooth images and minimal lag. I use this refresh rate myself and I played most of the games and I didn’t need a better refresh rate.
- 240Hz and above: Designed for competitive gaming, delivering the fastest and most responsive experience.
Conclusion
The Hz or refresh rate of your monitor determines its refresh rate, which significantly affects your viewing experience. For gaming, a higher Hz gives you an edge over your opponents with smoother visuals and reduced frame lag. For everyday use, it makes navigation and multitasking more fluid. I also wrote about another feature on monitors, which is MPRT. Now you are wondering what is MPRT.
Here’s the short answer. MPRT, or Moving Picture Response Time, is a technology to reduce motion blur. This shortens the time the frame is displayed on the monitor, thus reducing the effect of “ghosting” and “blurry”, painting a visually smoother picture while playing games.
